Music partners with art for annual exhibition in Greencastle-Antrim schools

Children and their families turned out in droves last week to enjoy the artistic efforts of Greencastle youth. “Food for Thought”, the first Fine Arts Night sponsored by the Greencastle-Antrim School District, replaced the traditional art department exhibition. Music was added to the open house, with presentations by students of all ages.

The K-12 display was held at the primary school.

“High school art students made giant food sculptures with mixed media,” said department chair Alex Miller. “It was a hit on campus and the kids were so proud. That launched the idea for our theme.”

Indeed, huge food samples greeted visitors, including an avocado, an ice cream sandwich, and at the outside entrance, waffles, eggs and bacon. Activities included face painting for youngsters, and a chance for anyone to color on a huge tablecloth.

Suzette Grazette waited for her kids, junior Savion and sixth-grader Gabriella, to participate in the music program. She found the entire event beautiful.

“They include everybody from kindergarten through seniors,” she said. “It’s wonderful Greencastle supports the arts.”

Freshman Jared Bussard did not have anything on display, claiming he had no artistic ability. He and his parents attended to watch his brother Jacob play the saxophone.

Jared eyed the room. “It’s kinda neat to see all the art and talent.”

Miller appreciated the turnout.

“There is definitely a big crowd tonight.”
