Scout project adds compost bin at Tayamentasachta

Nicholas Judge designed a compost system with doors that raise up for easy access to decaying natural materials. He set it up at Tayamentasachta for use by the the school district and for educational programs.

Nicholas Judge, 17, a homeschooled junior, is in the final stages of an Eagle Scout project. As a member of Boy Scout Troop 99, he is constructing a compost bin at Tayamentasachta.

He sought funds from businesses, and recruited help from fellow scouts.

They took out the old compost system and dug up the ground to ready it for concrete pads. Those have been poured and Nicholas constructed the three-part wooden bin to hold materials at various stages of decay.

By the time it has been moved to the last bin, it is ready for use in the garden.

Nicholas has ordered signs to explain the purpose of the environmentally-friendly system, and instructions on how people can do it at home.

“I’m coming down the home stretch,” he said.

He hopes to be finished in early June, but welcomes contributions to cover expenses. Donations may be sent to the treasurer of Troop 99 at 166 Creekwood Dr., Greencastle, PA 17225.

Nicholas is the son of Rob and Kathleen Judge.
