“On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!” is the theme of the 2016 summer reading program of the Franklin County Library System.

The kickoff for the summer of movement and fun locally at the Lilian S. Besore Memorial Library will be a concert at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16, featuring children's performer and recording artist ”Silly Joe” Consiglio. He will also perform at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at the Chambersburg Area Middle School South auditorium and at 10 a.m. Friday, June 17, at the Fulton County Library, McConnellsburg.

The performances are free and tickets may be picked up at any public library.

This summer, participants of all ages will explore sports, games, fitness, and movement through books, activities, art projects, and more.  In addition, history and cultures from around the world will be explored through diverse games and stories.

Register for summer reading activities at any Franklin County Library System libraries. Children ages 12 and under can attend programs and earn prizes for time spent reading. There is also a teen program for 12- to 19-year-olds and an adult program.

Children who read 16.9 minutes a day are exposed to 1,168,000 words a year and test in the 70th percentile.  If they read 33.4 minutes a day, they devour 2,357,000 words per year.

Visit www.fclspa.org for each library's specific calendar of events and to register for summer reading online.
