The annual fund drive for Greencastle’s Jerome R. King Playground is underway.

A fundraising letter went out this week for the playground, which is beginning its 101th year of serving the Greencastle-Antrim community. The letter noted donations are “gladly accepted throughout the year.”

“Each year we strive to make improvements to our facilities and explore ways to enhance the park for public enjoyment,” the letter says.

What you should know about the playground

The major accomplishment in 2023 was the completion of six lighted pickleball courts, which opened to the public on Oct. 2.

The 100th anniversary of the North Carlisle Street playground was commemorated in August with a program featuring people sharing their memories of the playground through the years.

Since 1923, the playground has been a community centerpiece. It is home to Barkdoll Field, where a number of local teams play baseball; pavilions and space for family reunions and picnics; tennis courts; playground equipment; and a T-ball field.

Movies and plays are held at the Veterans Memorial Bandstand. Plans are being made for this year’s free summer movie series and tentative dates are June 17, July 15 and Aug. 12.
