Show your purple

In case you haven’t noticed, Greencastle is a little more purple this week than it was before. And we don’t mean the building that houses Edward Jones in the downtown area, although that has certainly brought some color. It’s the bows that have shown up on each parking meter.

For several years the American Cancer Society has been “Painting the Town Purple” to raise community awareness in the fight against cancer. And it’s very appropriate that we in the Greencastle-Antrim community give such recognition. We do host a very special event in May that brings the fight against cancer very close to home.

For the 16th year Kaley Field of the Greencastle-Antrim School District will host the Greencastle Relay for Life on May 14 and 15. And we are fortunate to do so. It is a most inspiring community event.

People are already working toward this year’s $190,000 goal with yard sales, bake sales and other fund-raising activities. So even if you don’t plan to create or join a team of walkers for the relay, you can get involved. Patronize any and all of the fund-raising events.

And you can get your own slice of purple and show your support of the effort by buying a bow. Your donation of $5 will go towards the Greencastle Relay for Life. Bows can be purchased at the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce, 217, E. Baltimore St.

The Relay For Life of Greencastle has raised more than $1.5 million in the battle against cancer. Purple is the color of the Relay and symbolizes the passion of the people who gather together in 4800 communities across the United States to honor cancer survivors, to remember loved ones lost and to fight back through raising awareness of the benefits of early detection and a healthy lifestyle.
